After a sluggish start to the 2016-2017 season, Centennial boys lacrosse pushed passed their losses against top-ranked Marriotts Ridge and Glenelg, ending the season with an 11 game winning streak. Unfortunately, all winning streaks have to come to an end. Last season, Centennial met its demise in the second round of playoffs against Glenelg with a final score of 7-3. Boys varsity lacrosse finished their season first in the county with nine wins and three losses.
Despite the departure of last year seniors, senior Francis Kim is optimistic about what this year’s team has to offer and finds that the team is physically stronger.
“It was hard to see our seniors leave after such an early playoff loss, but we were definitely happy with how the regular season went. As a team, we had great chemistry, and gelled at a great time of the season,” Kim said. “I really can’t think of any improvements, other than an extreme amount of weight lifting. We just got unlucky [last season] with the absence of our head coach the day of the playoff game.”
Senior Jeremy Wilson, who was the leading scorer of the 2016-2017 season, received high praise from fellow senior teammate, Thomas Thurmond.
“Jeremy Wilson is a player to watch as he is on the brink of a points record,” he stated.
Wilson, who ended his junior season with an outstanding 82 goals, only needs two more goals to wipe out the existing goals record at Centennial High School. In addition to potentially becoming the highest goal scorer in Centennial history, Wilson only needs eight assists to tally the most assists by any Eagle the school has ever seen.
According to Thurmond, the Eagles have been preparing for the up and coming season in many ways, hoping to bounce back after last years loss in the playoffs.
“We have been preparing for run tests this year as there are stricter requirements, as we try to be a more conditioned team,” he said.
Senior goalie Jack Schlossberg believes that the team will excel in all physical aspects of lacrosse this upcoming season, due to all of the hard work put in by each player.
“We’re really expecting a major comeback. We all lift regularly and will surely be ripping net all season,” Schlossberg stated.
The 2018 season will definitely be one for books, as the Eagles are ready to make their mark on Centennial history.
