Coming off of back-to-back regional championships, the Centennial Eagles’ field hockey team has wasted no time proving they’re still a powerhouse in the county. With only two losses so far this season, the Eagles are combining experience, talent, and grit as they set their sights on another title run.

One of the team’s latest highlights came in a hard-fought win over Marriotts Ridge. The Eagles edged out the Mustangs, behind electric goals from Annabel Arrington (11) and Maddie Stachera (10). Arrington not only scored, but also set up Stachera’s goal, displaying her playmaking ability in the midfield. That offensive spark, combined with senior goalie Jane Baldy’s four clutch saves, sealed a 2-1 victory, and showcased the Eagles’ ability to deliver under pressure.

Stachera, an anchor on defense, shared her fearless approach for this season. “When I step onto the field, I remember that it is just a game and you can’t take it too seriously. If I make a mistake, I remind myself not to get upset because I know that will just cause me to get in my head and I remind my teammates of this as well. Also, I know that I am able to commit myself to the ball because even if I mess up, Jane will be right behind me ready to step up. So I just go for it and don’t worry about the possibility of mistakes because in the end it will work itself out.” 

Along with trust and talent, balance across the lineup is also key to Centennial’s success. In the cage, Baldy, a University of Delaware commit, provides leadership and poise as the team’s last line of protection. On defense, Stachera and Sophomore Sam Taylor anchor the backfield with toughness and awareness in only their second season.

The midfield is powered by Senior Captain Ava Rudy and Junior Captain Arrington, turning defense into offense and setting the tone for the team’s tempo. 

Arrington explained the challenge and importance of her position, saying, “For me, in the midfield, I just try to make sure that I keep up with the pace of the game. It’s difficult when the ball is moving so fast, but if I am able to get back on defense and then attack when I need to, then I can more effectively play the position.” 

That relentless effort, along with her vision and energy, has made her a driving force in the Eagles’ game plan. 

She also reflected on the team’s growth, adding, “My favorite part of this season has been just seeing how much we’ve grown as a team over the last few years. I love that we are able to work with each other so well, and I honestly think that has been our key to success.”

Rudy, who also helps control the midfield, emphasized the togetherness of this year’s team. “Our effort and passion for the sport is apparent in everything we do, and I’m so proud to call these girls my teammates.” 

This bond between teammates is what sets them apart from other teams, and will help with their ongoing success. The bond is a reminder that chemistry off the field translates to success on the field.

Up front, the forward dynamic duo of Claire Whipkey (12) and Caroline Cudzilo (11) brings speed, scoring power, and relentless pressure, making them a constant threat to opposing defenses. Leading by example, these players have made the team what it is, a group who trusts and works together to dominate the Nest.

As the season continues, the Eagles’ blend of championship experience, mentality, and unity sets them apart. With momentum already building, Centennial fans have plenty of reason to believe that this squad can soar even higher and keep adding to its winning legacy.
