One Down, Two to Go

On February 16 and 17, the Centennial Varsity and Junior Varsity wrestling teams competed in the county tournament at Mount Hebron High School. Team captains senior Jacob Blyukher (138) and junior Jason Kraisser (145) finished the county tournament strong, finishing first place in their weight classes. Junior, Matt Demme (170) finished counties in sixth place.

Freshman, Chris Lee finished his first year at counties in fifth place. Although only first through fourth place is guaranteed a spot in the regional tournament, if a wrestler has accumulated enough points throughout the season they are able to move on to regionals.

The Junior Varsity finished off the season competing in the county tournament. Freshmen, Abaad Shaik (106) finished his year winning third place, Elijah Ruiz (113) placing fourth, and Danny Corazzi (113) placing fifth overall in the tournament.

Varsity wrestlers Jason Kraisser, Jacob Blyukher, and Chris Lee continue on to the regional tournament on February 23 and 24 at Severna Park High School.

Wrestling Regional Tournament

On February 24-25, 2017, the Centennial Wrestling team competed in the 3A/4A East Regional Tournament.

The Eagles started extremely strong on the first day of wrestling after all four wrestlers advanced to the semi-finals the next day. Sophomore Jason Kraisser (138) won with a tech fall 17-1, junior Jacob Blyukher (132) won with a fall, senior Amr Narmouq (160) won with a major 11-1, and lastly, junior Lucas Shapiro (195) won in overtime with a score of 7-5.

On the second day of regionals, Kraisser and Narmouq both won in semi-finals and advanced to the finals. Blyukher and Shapiro both had unfortunate losses in the semis and were placed in the consolation bracket.

In the finals, Kraisser pinned his opponent in the second period and became the 3A/4A Regional Champion. Narmouq lost in the finals with a tough 7-5 loss, however, he still advances to States.

Overall, the Eagles finished Regionals with Kraisser (1st place), Narmouq (2nd place), Blyukher (5th place), and Shapiro (5th place).

The 3A/4A State Championship is on March 3-4, 2017 at the Show Place Arena.

Wrestling County Championship

On February 17-18, the Centennial Wrestling team participated in the Howard County Championship.

The Eagles had four wrestlers that earned spots at Regionals: junior Jacob Blyukher (132 lb. weight class), sophomore Jason Kraisser (138 lb. weight class), senior Amr Narmouq (160 lb. weight class), and junior Lucas Shapiro (195 lb. weight class).

Kraisser came in first place in the County Championship and earned the No. 1 seed in the 3A/4A East Region Tournament. Blyukher came in second place and Narmouq and Shapiro came in third place in their respective brackets.

The wrestlers will compete in the Regional Tournament on February 24-25.

Wrestling Wins Tri-Meet

On Tuesday, December 13, the Centennial Boys’ Varsity Wrestling team hosted the Howard Lions and Reservoir Gators for a tri-meet.

For the first time since 2002, the Eagles beat the Gators, 39-33. They also defeated the Lions, 45-33. Centennial (2-0) won the meet, beating both teams, while Howard (1-1) finished second, and Reservoir (0-2) came in last.

Seniors Ammar and Amr Narmouq, juniors Jacob Blyukher and Lucas Shapiro, and sophomore Jason Kraisser won their matches. According to coach Cliff Kraisser, these wrestlers should win most of their matches this season.

Centennial’s record now stands as 2-1 for in county, and 2-2 for overall. They hope to capture more wins as the season goes on, starting with the Bear Cave Brawl Tournament on December 17.

Wrestling’s First Match of the Season

On Tuesday, December 6, the Centennial Wrestling team faced off against the Oakland Mills Scorpions for the first match of the season.  

This year’s varsity captains are senior Amr Narmouq, junior Jacob Blyukher, and sophomore Jason Kraisser.  

Oakland Mills won the overall match with a score of 50 while Centennial had a total of 16 points.  Centennial has their next match on December 13 for the Multiteam Event at home.

Wrestling Regionals

On Friday February 26 and Saturday February 27, the Regional Wrestling matches took place to determine the matchups for the State Final.

Centennial senior Austin Kraisser won his fourth straight Regional Title. Kraisser will be going for his third consecutive State Championship.

A. Kraisser’s younger brother, freshman Jason Kraisser, won his first Regional Title, following in the footsteps of his older brother.

Junior Ammar Narmouq was runner up in his weight class and will advance to the State Finals. Sophomore Jacob Blyukher also finished as a runner up and will move on to the state tournament.

Wrestling’s Tri-Match

On Tuesday, December 12, the Centennial Wrestling Team participated in a tri-match at home between Long Reach and Glenelg.

Centennial went 1-1 on the day, falling to Glenelg by 12 points, and beating Long Reach 72-6.

Senior Austin Kraisser went 2-0 on the day, registering two pins. Senior Cameron Neilon, junior Ammar Narmouq,  sophomores Jacob Blyukher, and Luke Shapiro all registered wins against Glenelg, an undefeated team. Freshman Jason Kraisser also pinned his opponent.

Against Long Reach, Blyukher, Ammar and Amr Narmouq all came away with victories. Senior Savya Konkalmatt got his first win in his only match of the day, and Hussain Naveed and Peter Gruys also helped give the Eagles a convincing win.
