Indoor Track and Field State Championship

On Tuesday, February 21, the Centennial Indoor Track and Field team competed in the State Finals.

For the Boys’ 4×800, juniors Greg Costello, Daniel Gao, Steven Mitchell, and senior Anthony Ferrera came in 7th place with a time of 8:39. This was a very good accomplishment for them and a strong finish to Ferrera’s last indoor season.

For the Girls’ 4×800, junior Claudia Pilcher and seniors Alli Krahe, Mary Monroe, and Olivia O’Connell finished in 6th place with a time of 10:10. This time set a new indoor record for Centennial. For the 1600m, sophomore Alison Betler came in 9th (5:30) and junior Kirsten Wikner came in 11th (5:33). For the 3200m, Betler came in 8th (12:22), sophomore Cora Blount came in 9th (12:25) and senior Kara Taylor came in 10th (12:26).

Indoor Track and Field Regionals

On Tuesday, February 7, the Centennial Eagles Track & Field team participated in Regionals. Centennial had many athletes who finished in the top 8 and multiple who qualified for States.

State qualifiers include Olivia O’Connell, Mary Monroe, Alli Krahe, and Claudia Pilcher for the Girls’ 4×800, along with Steven Mitchell, Daniel Gao, Anthony Ferrara, and Greg Costello for the Boys’ 4×800. Alison Betler finished in 8th place and Kirsten Wikner finished in 7th place for the Girls’ 1600, both qualifying for States. For the Girls’ 3200, Alison Betler, Cora Blount, and Kara Taylor finished 7th, 8th, and 10th, respectively, and all qualified for States. Ethan Carpenter finished in 4th place for the Boys’ 3200 and will run at States.

The runners will compete in the State Championship on February 21.

Indoor Track and Field County Championship

On Tuesday, January 17, Centennial High School took part in the Howard County Indoor Track and Field County Championship.

Centennial had many athletes who finished top eight in their event. In the boys’ 3200, Ethan Carpenter came in 5th (10:19) and Greg Costello came in 6th (10:21). Ryan Patterson came in 7th for the men’s shot put (39 ft 7 in). Centennial’s boys also came in 3rd in the 4×800 with a time of 8:37.

For the girls’ 3200, Alison Betler came in 3rd (11:54), Kara Taylor came in 4th (12:16), and Cora Blount came in 5th (12:16). Lauren Brown came in 4th for the shot put (30 ft 9 in). The Eagles did an outstanding job for the girls’ 4×800, coming in first place with a time of 10:16. This is also a Centennial indoor school record.

Cross Country State Championships

On Saturday November 12, the Cross Country MPSSAA 3A State Championship took place at Hereford High School.  

Seven out of the 35 high schools that participated were from Howard County. In the 3 Mile Varsity Men’s Race, Centennial High School finished in fifth place and senior Daniel Gao finished in twenty second place out of the 195 participants.  

For the Women’s 3 Mile Varsity Race, Centennial finished in fourth place with two out of the seven Centennial runners finishing in the top ten. Sophomore Alison Betler finished in ninth with a time of 20:02.2 and senior Kara Taylor finished in tenth with a time of 20:05.0.

Cross Country Regionals

On Thursday, November 3, the 3A East Region Cross Country Championships were held at Centennial High School. The high schools that participated are Atholton, Centennial, Chesapeake, Glenelg, Hammond, James M Bennett, Long Reach, Mount Hebron, Northeast, Reservoir High, River Hill, Stephen Decatur, and Wilde Lake.  

There were only two races that evening, the Men’s three mile race and the Women’s three mile race.  

Centennial finished in fourth place in the Men’s division and second place in the Women’s Division.

For the Eagles in the Men’s race, senior Daniel Gao finished in fourteenth place and for the Eagles. In the Women’s race, senior Kara Taylor finished in fifth place, sophomore Alison Betler finished in sixth and sophomore Cora Blount finished in eighth place.

The Cross Country State Championships will be on November, 12, at Hereford High School.

Cross Country County Championship

On October 27, 2016, the Centennial Eagles Girls and Boys Cross Country teams placed exceptionally well at the County Championship.

Sophomore Alison Betler finished sixth overall with a time of 19:27. The girls’ top six placed as following: Betler(6), senior Kara Taylor(8), sophomore Cora Blount(9), junior Cassie Yates(35), sophomore Christina Stavlas(43), and junior Carolina Requejo(47). The girls placed second overall.

The top six runners for the Boys’ were senior Daniel Gao (14), junior Ethan Carpenter (15), junior Steven Mitchell (17), senior Anthony Ferrara (40), David Rina (46), and sophomore Chris Bieberich(51). The team finished in sixth place overall.

The Regional Championship is on November 3, 2016 at Centennial.

Indoor Track Regionals

On Tuesday, February 2, Centennial Indoor Track participated in the 2016 Regional Meet.

Seniors Ashley Mazer, and Jessica Jiang, junior Kara Taylor, and sophomore Kirsten Wickner qualified for the 4×800 State Meet.

Mazer also qualified to run the two mile race at States.

States will be held on Tuesday, February 16.
