Girls’ Lacrosse Trumps Hebron in First Round of Playoffs

On Wednesday, May 10, the Centennial Girls’ Lacrosse team defeated rival Mount Hebron in the first round of 3A Playoffs.

Though the Vikings quickly took the lead by a goal, the Eagles fought back and senior Laurie Bracey scored, tying the game at one. Bracey scored again, followed by a goal from junior Claudia Pilcher, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead. The game remained close in the first half and Pilcher scored two more goals, giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead going into the second half.

In the second half, Hebron came out firing and scored tying the game at 5. However, Bracey and Pilcher both put balls in the net which gave the Eagles a two goal cushion. Freshman goalie Sarah Thorman made some impressive saves which kept the Eagles in the lead for the majority of the game. The teams fought hard and ended up tied at 7, making the game go into overtime.

The Eagles started overtime with a drive down the field, but were unable to score. The Vikings quickly got their own opportunity, but the Eagles’ defense, led by seniors Ryleigh Ahearn and Gabby Fairley were able to stop them from scoring.

The Eagles once again drove down the field. The game took a turn when sophomore Marissa Lagera was fouled and got a penalty shot. As soon as the whistle blew, Lagera nailed the ball past the Hebron keeper, winning the game.

The Eagles will move on to the second round of the 3A Playoffs. The next game is on Friday, May 12, against the Glenelg Gladiators.

Girls’ Lacrosse Wins Big on Senior Night

On Friday, May 5, Centennial Girls’ Lacrosse honored their “señioritas” on Senior Night. The Eagles played against the River Hill Hawks.

Before the game, seniors Ryleigh Ahearn, Laurie Bracey, Gabby Fairley, and Madi Griffin were escorted by their families onto the field and given gifts.

The Eagles quickly took control of the game, scoring multiple goals against the Hawks. Centennial’s defense held off River Hill’s offensive advances and kept them to one goal in the first half. The Eagles had a 10-1 lead going into halftime.

The second half went the same way as the first half and the Eagles scored five more goals to win the game 15-1.

Lead scorers from the game were Bracey (4), freshman Rasa Welsh (4), junior Claudia Pilcher (3), and sophomore Marissa Lagera (2).

The Eagles will play on Wednesday, May 10, against Mt. Hebron in the first round of playoffs.

National Signing Day

National Signing Day was on Friday, November 11. Centennial had five seniors that signed this fall.

Three athletes signed to play lacrosse; Laurie Bracey who signed with the University of Maryland, Gabby Fairley who committed to the University of Vermont, and Mason Smith who signed with York College of Pennsylvania. Centennial also had Camryn Allen sign to play volleyball at Towson University and Mary Margaret Baldy signed to Ursinus College to play field hockey.

Girls’ Lacrosse Senior Night

On Tuesday, May 3, Centennial Girl’s Varsity Lacrosse defeated the Oakland Mills Scorpions 18-0.

Seniors Izzie Chausse, Peyton Conley, Samantha Courtemanche, Allie Durkee, Devin McIntyre, and Megan Oliver were honored with flowers and gifts. Senior managers Rachel Braun and Reese Western were also thanked for their contributions to the team during the season.

The Eagles offense generated a multitude of opportunities and the defense kept the Scorpions off the scoreboard.

McIntyre had four goals, Courtemanche had three, Chausse and Conley had two, Durkee, Oliver, juniors Laurie Bracey, Gabby Fairley, and Madi Griffin, along with sophomore Claudia Piltcher and freshman Marissa Lagera each had one goal.

Girls’ Lacrosse Defeats Hammond in Season Opener

On Tuesday, March 22, Centennial Girls’ Lacrosse defeated Hammond 17-1 in their opening game.

Led by the offense, Centennial showed their stick skills and maneuvered around the Hammond defense. Seniors Devin McIntyre and Samantha Courtemanche were involved in multiple offensive plays and McIntyre led the team in goals.

Junior Madi Griffin played excellent defense on Hammond’s star player and kept her away from the goal, leading to Hammond’s single goal.

Centennial’s 17 goals were scored by nine different players. McIntyre had four goals, Courtemanche had three, junior Laurie Bracey and sophomore Kirsten Wikner had two each, and seniors Allie Durkee, Peyton Conley, Megan Oliver, junior Griffin, and sophomore Claudia Piltcher had one each.

Centennial Girls Lacrosse Succumbs to Glenelg

The Centennial Lady Eagles lacrosse team played the Glenelg Gladiators Thursday, April 30. The Eagles lost 12-5 in a game cut short because of inclement weather. Centennial’s five goals were scored by sophomore Laurie Bracey (3), senior Olivia Canby (1), and senior Martha Hutzell (1).

The Eagles honored their seniors at Senior Night. They recognized their senior players: captain Olivia Canby, Anna Consentino, Martha Hutzell, and Emila Uribe, as well as their managers Dani Wilson and Ashley Oliver.

The Eagles will move on to the MPSSAA playoffs.
