On Friday, September 6, the Centennial Varsity Football team lost their first game of the season to opponent Catonsville High School by a score of 32-7.

In the first quarter, the Catonsville Comets jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring two field goals.

The Comets continued to extend their lead in the second quarter after scoring four touchdowns, and went into halftime with a 32-0 lead.

In the second half, the Eagles stepped up defensively and shut out Catonsville, allowing zero points in both the third and fourth quarter.

The highlight of the game came in the fourth quarter when senior wide receiver Anthony Matthews caught an 18 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Malik Chester for Centennial’s first points of the season.

Although the Eagles did not reach their goal of winning the game, senior safety and running back Muchiri Mbugua is focusing on the positives the team can take away from the game.

“I think the most obvious thing is that we put up points. You look back to last year and we were unable to do that for the entire season. Also, although we gave up 32 points in the first half, we readjusted some things on defense and shut them out in the second half,” said Mbugua.

Mbugua sees there is room for improvement for the football team as well.

“Our team can improve in all facets of the game. We are all going to review the film from the game and clean up our mistakes, both individually and as a team. I keep saying that although it’s not the step we wanted, it was still a step in the right direction.”

The Eagles will have the chance to bounce back next week on the road when they face Francis Scott Key High School on September 13.
