On Oct. 8, No. 5 Centennial beat No. 8 Glenelg in boys’ varsity soccer, with a final score of 2-1.

Glenelg scored its first and only goal at 24 minutes in the first half.  The forty minutes of the first half ended with Centennial trailing 1-0.

“It was a frustrating half because I felt like we didn’t adjust to the way the game was being played.  The other team had more fire,” said head coach, Jim Zehe. “I was confident we could come back.”

The second half started out slow, with neither side scoring for 23 minutes.  However, the Eagles managed to tie the game in a surprising play.

Alex Johnson and William Vea assisted Andrew Gavlin for the tying point and Gavlin’s first goal of the season.

“I did a move I’d never really done before successfully,” said Gavlin.  “We’d been really pushing for that goal.” Gavlin added, “I don’t think I’ve even scored a goal in practice.  I’ve scored some lacrosse goals, but this one was pretty special.”

His team was excited as well. “It was so exciting I almost cried,” said Gavlin’s teammate, Heston Priestley. “It was the best moment ever.”

The goal provided the momentum needed for the team to come back for a win. Seven minutes later, Tommy Wang scored the winning goal with an assist from Michael Merkey.

“It’s always good to get a come from behind win and to overcome adversity,” said Zehe. “We’re only one game from first place.  We have a lot of things to play for.”
