On Thursday, Oct. 24, the Centennial boys’ soccer team took the field against City College High School for their first game of the playoffs.
Things did not start off the way the Eagles planned when a collision between goalie Kevin Wilson and an opposing player less than 10 minutes into the game led to Wilson being ejected. Back-up goalie Corey Grable entered the game in Wilson’s place. Tommy Wang got things back on track a little later in the half with a goal assisted by Michael Merkey to make the score 1-0.
Senior Max Dwyer had the play of the night a few minutes later when he scored on a bicycle kick to make it 2-0.
The change in goal was not a problem, as seniors Andrew Gavlin and Alex Lingg, along with Grable, kept the opposing offense in check; they did not allow a goal all night.
The Eagles did not let up in the second half. Dwyer assisted Gavlin off of a free kick early into the half. Senior Will Vea was all over the field in the game, which paid off as he was able to find the back of the net late in the game.
A foul late in the game resulted in a penalty kick for Centennial. Senior Anthony Chiu took the kick and scored to seal the deal for the Eagles. The final score was 5-0.
The Eagles move on to play Mt. Hebron in the next round.
