Although the winter weather continues to hit Maryland, Centennial High School’s spring athletes are ready to get in the game. Spring sports season is here and Centennial High School’s lacrosse, baseball, softball, and track student athletes came to school on Saturday, Feb. 28 for tryouts in hopes of making a winning team.
Centennial athletes are pushing themselves to try and reserve their spot. Maggie Sullivan, Ashley Mazer and Stevie Sedlacko have been anticipating tryouts and are pumped to play for Centennial this spring.
Maggie Sullivan, a sophomore at Centennial High School, has been playing girls lacrosse for 8 years, 7 on a recreational team and 1 on Centennial girl’s JV lacrosse team.
Hoping to make the girls varsity team, Sullivan said, “I think I can bring a lot of heart, enthusiasm and hustle to the team.”
She has been hard at work preparing for this season. “The past two weeks I have been coming after school whenever I can to play wall ball and run sprints as well as train with my indoor club field hockey team,” said Sullivan.
After all the hard work, she said “I am really excited for the season to build up my strength and take my stick skills to a new level. I’m also excited to bond with the team, get to know people and to go far as a team.”
Ashley Mazer is eager to make the varsity outdoor track team. As a junior, this is her second year trying out for track and the first year she is required to make varsity. Mazer feels prepared for the season because she has been “running cross country and indoor track earlier this year.”
She is very excited for the season and said, “I can’t wait to spend it with some of the best people I know. Also, I’m excited for the running and more meets to compete in.” If she makes the varsity team, Mazer thinks she will “add a good, positive and encouraging energy to the team.”
Hoping to play baseball with friends he hasn’t had the chance to play with in the past, Stevie Sedlacko said, “I can hardly sit and wait around for the anticipation of the opening day.” After spending his freshman year in high school at Mount Saint Joseph, he is working to take a spot on one of the Centennial baseball teams.
“For all of the fall and majority of the winter, I went to Coach Ahearn’s workouts after school. I also tried to throw and hit as much as I could in between basketball practices after school,” said Sedlacko.
With the ability to make the JV or varsity team, Sedlacko said, “I hope to make the team that the coaches think is best for me.” No matter which team he makes, he feels he “can bring the intangibles to the team: the hard work, leadership, and knowing I may not play, but am willing to do whatever is necessary to help the team.”
