After last weeks’ thrilling victory over Oakland Mills, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the Centennial varsity football team this week as they played at Wilde Lake with a chance to start the season 2-0. However, the Eagles lost in a valiant effort, 25-15.
After an early score from Wilde Lake, the junior Quinn Western returned a long kickoff into Wildecats’ territory. This set up a short touchdown run by junior Walter Fletcher, which tied the score at 7-7. After a late touchdown, Wilde Lake led 13-7.
Both teams moved the ball well in the third quarter, with Wilde Lake scoring with just under three minutes left in the quarter. Wilde Lake scored midway through the 4th quarter to make the score 25-7.
After the score, the Eagles’ offense marched down the field, highlighted by a long run from junior Chase Conley. Junior Quarterback Tyler Morris threw a short touchdown to junior Michael Price for a touchdown. Fletcher scored on the two-point conversion to make the score 25-15. The Eagles tried an onside kick with under a minute left, but Wilde Lake recovered the ball. The game ended at 25-15.
Many Centennial students came out to support the team at the Wildecats’ stadium. “It’s always nice to have a big crowd,” said Centennial’s Head Coach Todd Kriner.
The Eagles play another away game next week on September 14th against River Hill at 7:00.
