Boys’ Basketball Defeats Wilde Lake in Third Round of Playoffs

On Wednesday, March 2, the gym at Centennial High School was packed with students, parents, and fans for the Regional Semi Final game between the Eagles and the Wilde Lake Wildecats. The Eagles impressed the crowd and came back to win the game 58-42.

The Eagles struggled to hit shots outside the paint, so the offense began looking into the post for points around the rim. Sophomore Kaleb Addisu was a force inside, finishing consistently.

With the Eagles down by three at the half for the second straight game, the team came out of the locker room fired up. Senior EJ Fowler and junior Elijah White, along with Brown, Addisu, and senior Michael Merkey, led the play for the Eagles. The Eagle defense pressured the Wilde Lake offense and made them take hard shots.

Brown led the game with 16 points, White finished with 13, Addisu scored 12, Fowler finished with 7, Merkey scored 6, and junior Alex Fant and sophomore Jayden Smith finished with 3 and 1 respectively.

The Eagles move on to play Stephen Decatur on Friday, March 5.

Boys’ Basketball Beats Reservoir in Second Round of Playoffs

On Tuesday, February 29, the Centennial Boys’ Basketball team started its playoff run. The team took on the reservoir Gators at home.

After overcoming a 3-point halftime deficit, the Eagles stormed back, emerging with a 57-53 victory.

Senior Tom Brown, was the offensive force for the Eagles, dropping a game high 20 points. Fellow senior Michael Merkey chipped in 13, capitalizing on many trips to the free throw line. Junior Elijah White and sophomore Jayden Williams each scored 8 points, senior EJ Fowler had 4 points, junior Alex Fant and sophomore Kaleb Addisu each scored 3 points, and sophomore Andrew Hohmann had 2.

The Eagles will play Wilde Lake at home on Wednesday, March 2.

Girls’ Basketball Defeats Reservoir in Playoffs

On Friday, February 26, the Centennial Girls’ Basketball team defeated the Reservoir Gators in the first round of the 3A playoffs, 49-35.

Sophomore Kelly Simmons had an outstanding game, registering a game high 19 points. Senior duo Ally Driscoll and Kewa Gray each had 11 points, junior Jasmine McCree had 6, and freshman Ashley Molz had 2.

The team will take on Long Reach on March 1.

Girls’ Basketball Big Win on Senior Night

On Friday February 19, the Centennial Girls’ Basketball team took on the Atholton Raiders in the annual senior night basketball game. Honored that night were seniors Ally Driscoll, Jesse Dunagan, Izzie Chausse , Peyton Conley, and Kewa Gray.

The Eagles pulled out an upset, winning 52-43, spoiling the Raiders’ chances of sharing the county title.

The Eagles were led by Driscoll and Gray with 13 points a piece. Sophomore Kelly Simmons followed with 12 points, junior Jasmine McCree and freshman Ashley Molz each scored 7 points and Chausse scored 2 points.

The team will start their playoff run on Friday, February 22.

Tom Brown Scores 1,000 Points During Senior Night

On Saturday February 20, the Centennial Boys’ Basketball team had their Senior Night against the Reservoir Gators. The seniors honored were Tom Brown, E.J. Fowler, Michael Merkey, and Javon Smith.  The Eagles defeated the Gators 56-53, with Brown and junior Elijah White leading the team.

In the late third quarter, the game was stopped to congratulate Brown, as he hit 1,000 points over his career as an Eagle. He is only the second person for Boys’ Basketball to score 1,000 points during their high school career. The win pushes Centennial to 12-6 in county and 14-7 overall.

Kyle Taylor Signs Letter of Intent

On Wednesday, February 4, senior Kyle Taylor signed his Letter of Intent to play football and run track at Lincoln University. Family, coaches, and teammates were present at Taylor’s signing.

Boys’ Basketball Defeats Rival Mount Hebron

On Friday, January 15, the Centennial Boys’ Basketball team played rival Mount Hebron in the teams’ only meeting of the season. In front of a sold out crowd, the Eagles came away with a 49-41 win.

It was a strong performance from the Eagles who are looking to surge into the second half of their season.

The Eagles were led by seniors Tom Brown and Michael Merkey who each had 13 points in the game. Senior EJ Fowler finished with 7 points , sophomore Kaleb Addisu had 6, sophomore Jayden Williams and junior Elijah White both had 4, senior and Javon Smith finished with 2.

Girls’ Basketball Pulls Out Victory Over Wilde Lake

Centennial’s Girls’ Basketball team won on Wednesday, January 13. The Eagles beat Wilde Lake 44-41 in a hard fought game.  

Sophomore Kelly Simmons and senior Kewa Gray led the team in points, scoring 16 and 12 respectively.  Senior Jesse Dunagan contributed to the win by increasing the energy. Dunagan challenged the Wilde Lake offense and defense with her unwavering hustle. This now puts the Lady Eagles record at 5-4.

Centennial Hockey Defeats the WHO in Senior Night Game

Centennial’s Hockey Club faced-off against The WHO on Friday, January 8, 2016 for their senior night. The WHO is a combo team with players from Wilde Lake, Hammond, and Oakland Mills.

The three seniors honored were; Hunter Hall (captain), Ben Colby (assistant captain), and Scott Yablon (assistant captain). The seniors and their parents walked out on the red carpet while the announcer read a summary of the players’ high school hockey careers and their plans for the future.

Sophomore Michael Hughes scored one goal for the Eagles in the first period, which ended with the Eagles trailing the WHO 1-2.

The Eagles scored four goals in the second period, two from Hughes, one from sophomore Nicholas Priester, and the other from sophomore Franklin Yang. Though the team was able to score four goals, the WHO still dominated the game 5-6.

The Eagles came out hard in the third period and quickly took the lead after Priester scored a goal. Hughes was able to score two additional goals, putting the Eagles ahead of the WHO. The Eagles won the game 8-7. The hockey team will be playing at the Laurel Garden’s Ice House against Glenelg on Tuesday, January 12.

Lady Eagles Defeat Reservoir in Basketball

On Friday, December 18, the Centennial Girls’ Basketball team took on Reservoir at home, looking to bounce back from a four-point loss on the road against Glenelg.

The Eagles took care of business on Friday, earning a 39-25 win.

Sophomore Kelly Simmons continued her dominating 2015 season by putting up 16 points. Senior Ally Driscoll scored 2 points in her first game back after an ankle injury. Junior Jasmine McCree put up nine points, and senior Kewa Gray had 6 points, senior Jesse Dunagan had four points, and senior Izzie Chausse had two points.
