The Run to States

Words: Sandy Eichhorn

On Saturday, November 8, the girls’ and boys’ cross country teams raced for the State Championship. This year’s race was held at Bull Run, one of the toughest courses in Maryland.

The entire season has paved the way to this race. The girls have trained all season to compete at the state level. The team, made up of three seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore, took to the starting line.

For sophomore Kara Taylor, this was her second race at States and her first race at Bull Run. When asked what it was like to run for the State Championship, Taylor said, “It’s nerve racking. Beforehand I was really nervous because everyone else had been to the course and this was my first time.” The pre-run jitters did not stop Taylor from finishing in twenty-sixth place overall and third for the Centennial team. The team came in fourth place in the state at the Championship.

Like the girls’ team, the boys’ long season has led them to the most anticipated race of the year. This was the first time racing at States for captain and senior Andrew Conca-Cheng. Conca-Cheng said, “It was pretty great making it to states because we had worked so hard during the season to get there.” The team ran a great race, finishing sixteenth overall.
