Food for the Soul, Words for the Heart

Words: Meghan Moore

On Feb. 19, the Delta Scholar’s hosted Food for the Soul, Words for the Heart, an event in which they celebrated Black History Month through different styles of entertainment. Delta Scholar president Diane Ijoma, stated that “The point of the soul food dinner was to celebrate Black History Month and unify Centennial.”

The evening‘s events consisted of a speech by Mr. Warren, poetry readings by Centennial students as well as Delta Scholars from Reservoir High School. In addition there were two traditional African dances from Centennial students.

“It was a really unique take on the event because usually when we talk about Black History Month we don’t go beyond the U.S.” added Ijoma

Centennial students Kennedy Lewis and C’yana Denby performed “Phenomenal Woman,” a spoken word poem by Maya Angelou, in the form of a dance.

When asked if she thought that the attendees left with a better understanding for the occasion, Diana stated: “I’m really proud of how the audience left with a great impression of Black history and left with a feel of what it is really like. It was very powerful.”
