2020: An Unforgettable Experience
2020 was quite the ride for everyone. Some found it an enjoyable one, while others weren’t fans of this rollercoaster of a year. This pandemic has affected many, a portion of that population being teenagers. It’s been, without a doubt, an interesting year, and we’re just waiting to see what 2021 has in store for us.
Senior Myeves Lucien shared some of the things 2020 has taught her. “The lessons I learned from 2020 were to treat myself better and be more aware of who I surround myself with,” recognized Lucien. “In quarantine I had no choice but to only be around myself and with that I had no choice but to love my own company. I just need to continue treating myself with love and respect, especially as we continue in both the pandemic of COVID and racism.”
Noelle Mitchell, a junior, expressed her struggle with current events as the year continued. “While the first couple months of quarantine were chill, productive, and a good time. It continued to get less exciting with all the facism,” said Mitchell. “It was hard seeing all this, our country is not doing well.”
Mitchell, as most students, was not a big fan of online schooling, especially as a junior. “[Online school is] horrible! Very stressful, but good teachers and staff are making it bearable.” Despite the hardships, Mitchel ended on a positive note with a few resolutions she has for 2021. “I want to start drinking at least 2 cups of almond milk everyday, to get stronger bones! If there’s anything I’ve learned in the last few months, it’s to stop caring about everyone’s opinions, people are gonna talk, so let them. Here’s something everyone should follow this year: ‘My way or the highway.’”
Sophomore Isabella Oyola found her second year of high school stressful but definitely not bad. “Obviously it seemed nice to stay home, but after a while it got much harder and took a toll on my mental health. I wouldn’t wish it wouldn’t have happened because I feel like I’ve learned a lot more about myself during this time,” said Oyola.
Many people have taken this time of isolation to better themselves and become more confident and comfortable. While it’s been an extremely confusing and unexpected year, it’s impacted every single one of us, it’s taught us, it’s taken from us, it’s tested us, and most of all, it’s surprised us.
