On Friday, November 18, Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano announced his intention to retire, effective January 10, 2024. HCPSS released a statement announcing that “the Board of Education will deliberate and select an interim superintendent” to serve for the remaining duration of the 2023-2024 school year.
Prior to his current role, Martirano served as a “teacher, teacher specialist, assistant principal, principal,” superintendent, and state superintendent in various other counties and states. In July 2018, he officially stepped into the position of HCPSS Superintendent after having served as an interim superintendent since May 3, 2017.
The announcement follows multiple moments of contention for Dr. Martirano, including county-wide bus transportation issues and backlash concerning a message released about the Israel-Palenstine war. Though no reason has been cited for his plan to retire mid-year, Martirano expressed deep gratitude for the “distinct honor” of serving as superintendent.
