Hollywood stars attended the 2024 Met Gala in New York, on the first Monday of May. Viewers were excited for the theme, as Anna Wintour, who has been the lead chairperson of the MET since 1995, decided to make the dress code at this year’s event “Garden of Time” in honor of the Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties” exhibit at the museum.
The red carpet opened with co-chairs Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Hemsworth,
many of them ending up being the very few who followed the theme at the event. Bad Bunny wore a suit that surpassed most of the men’s look at the gala, wearing a custom black Maison Margiela suit that included white stitched lining on the jacket and pants with red stripes in the inner thigh, adding black flowers as his accessory. As Bad Bunny was a standout, most outfits that were worn by the men lacked a sense of creativity, like co-chair Chris Hemsworth’s attire. He attended the carpet with his wife, Elsa Pataky in Tom Ford. Pataky’s outfit seemed to be more suitable for the theme than Hemsworth, who was only wearing a sleek tan suit, white dress shirt and black shoes. And he certainly was wearing Tom Ford; a respected clothing designer worldwide, but it didn’t fit the theme.
While some attendees didn’t exactly understand the theme, there were many guests that were successful with following the dress code, especially those who have been away from the Met Gala scene that arrived with jaw-dropping looks. Stars like Lana Del Rey were classified as best dressed; the singer wore a beautiful ivory-colored custom gown by Alexander McQueen with a tan sheer covering that included roots and vines throughout the dress with a minimal accessory of a single red rose in hand, symbolizing “sleeping beauty.” Not only that, but Zendaya also turned heads with two stunning looks, wearing a custom blue and green Margiela look featuring makeup done by influential makeup artist Pat Mcgrath, and a vintage Givenchy dress from their spring 1996 collection.
The Met Gala featured a total of 263 looks that either did or did not fit the theme; those who fully embraced the theme with creative outfits were highly praised by viewers. Fan-favorite Gigi Hadid stepped on the red carpet in a white floral custom Thom Browne gown with a train she claimed was “40 pounds.” Actress Greta Lee debuted at her first Met Gala in a sculpted white lace gown with floral appliques made by Loewe, and “IT girl” Chloe Sevigny showed out in custom Dilara Findikoglu that beautifully represented all aspects of the Victorian era. The creativity put into the outfit was absolutely stunning, from the Victorian women’s mourning hair to the old fashion makeup, and reconstructed Victorian garments that were used for the gown.
This year, one actor in particular seemed to shock the eyes of viewers in her custom “sculptural” gown by designer Gaurav Gupta. GLAMOUR writer Elizabeth Logan said, “Actor and writer Mindy Kaling has attended the Met Gala many times before … she always looks so lovely … but she’s never been one of the super-on-theme or avant-garde best dressed … until now.” Kaling made sure to stun the world with her beautiful beige sculpted gown that represented a blooming flower in the back of the dress. The other stars who followed the theme down to a tee dazzling the carpet: Ameila Gray, a rising model, wore a yellow piece from Undercover’s Paris Fashion week collection last year that was reminiscent of Princess Aurora’s dress that writers at the Cut believe “perfectly embodies the sleeping-beauty theme.” Many didn’t understand or talk about the look due to its very raw-edged, rebellion-inspired clothing, but the piece brought a very unpredictable yet beautiful look to the red carpet.
At this year’s Met Gala, designers outdid themselves compared to previous years. Stars showed out in amazing custom gowns and suits made by the creativity and dedication of designers to ensure that their pieces were able to represent the theme. And after years of missing the theme, stars have set the bar even higher than before after this year’s Met Gala.
