Summer 2022 Entertainment

The last day of school is June 17th, meaning that summer is almost here. Soon, instead of being stressed about finals, people will be worried about what to fill their long summer days with. Since people need entertainment over the summer, here are some suggestions from the staff here at the Wingspan.

Some days may be too hot or rainy for sports outside, so why not play “Nintendo Switch Sports instead”? “Nintendo Switch Sports” is a follow up on the popular Wii Sports series on the original Wii console. Nintendo Switch Sports lets you play some returning sports like bowling and  tennis, as well as chambara. In addition to these classics, it has new sports like soccer, volleyball and badminton. The sports have a lot of replayability and can be played locally or online. You can also customize your character with different outfits. An update to the game in the fall will add golf to the selection of sports as well.

If you liked the Super Mario series and soccer, then you might like” Mario Strikers: Battle League,” which will be released on June 10th. “Mario Strikers: Battle League” is a soccer video game that is more arcade-y than games like “FIFA,” and features the Mario cast with over the top gameplay. While trying to score goals, there are many different things to deal with like getting tackled by other players or getting launched into an electric fence. However, if someone tackles or attacks you, you are then granted an item like a banana peel or shell that functions similarly to the items in the popular “Mario Kart” series. Each character also has different strengths and weaknesses. Beyond these features, there is also different armor you can equip that gives different stat bonuses like speed, strength, etc.

If video games aren’t your thing, the highly anticipated show “Obi Wan Kenobi” was released on May 27th on the streaming service Disney+. The show is set in the popular Star Wars universe and centers around protagonist Obi Wan Kenobi from the previous Star Wars films. More specifically, the show deals with events that happened in the movie “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.”

Two highly anticipated movies released in theaters on May 27th include the movie starring Tom Cruise, “Top Gun Maverick,” and “The Bob’s Burger Movie.” More movies such as “Crimes of the Future,” “Fire Island,” and “Phantom of The Open” are set to release this month. However, the most anticipated of these June releases are “Jurassic World Dominion,” which comes out June 9th and stars the infamous Chris Pratt, and the prequel “Lightyear,” which comes out June 17th and stars Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear.
